On a bluff below the lodge sits 100,000 square feet of pure putting genius. The Cascades was built under the watchful eye of David McLay Kidd — the mastermind behind Gamble Sands itself — as an homage to the Himalayas at St Andrews, the putting course that has captured the imagination of generations of golfers.

It measures 175 yards, which is the point: it suits a veteran and someone who has never picked up a club equally well. In the evening it turns into the hub of the whole resort, when the fire pits go on and the glow balls come out.

So: dinner, then all four of us out here. Bring a light and bring a drink — this is where the night happens.

Classic, high-quality grill fare in a sophisticated setting. This is the option if Saturday dinner should be an event rather than a refuel — order the Tower of Tots for the table and argue about it afterwards.

The Barn

The casual room, open through the day and serving dinner as well. The part that matters most to us is the grab-and-go setup: if Quicksands happens Sunday morning before the 11:50 tee time, breakfast has to be something you can carry.
